Employee Spotlight Terrance Hillman

TERRANCE HILLMAN · Superintendent

What is something about your job that you think other people should know?
Something about my job that I think people should know is that construction is a very rewarding career field. In this field, not only do we transform existing spaces or lots into updated and new structures, but this also leads to transforming the communities that we work in as well. We are building spaces where our community members will live, work, and shop. The best part is walking through a completed project and recalling all the work from multiple parties it took to create the space.

What is your role as a superintendent to the team during a project?
As a superintendent, I have the responsibility of being the eyes and ears for the project management team on the jobsite. The team may not always be on site every day; therefore, the superintendent must be in communication with all parties involved throughout the construction process. As many know, challenges will arise throughout construction, and as the jobsite superintendent I must address these challenges in a timely manner to keep the job on schedule.

What does “Beyond What’s Expected” mean to you?
“Beyond What’s Expected” means going the extra mile to do whatever is necessary to complete the job on budget. This can involve working longer hours, weekends and completing tasks that are not part of normal day-to-day operations.

What is a valuable lesson you have learned during your career?
A valuable lesson I have learned is to never be afraid to ask questions. Construction is an ever-changing industry with many new technologies, materials and methods being utilized. I believe every day is a new opportunity to learn something. There are many different trades that cycle through any given construction site, and I try to ask each of them questions about their work to better understand future projects.

Do you prefer to travel or explore local interest points?
In my free time I prefer to travel and visit family and friends. My recent summer excursions included trips to Nashville, Austin, and England.  Each fall I spend time hunting at our family cabin in northeast Pennsylvania. In the winter months, hopefully after a nice snow fall, I will grab my snowboard and hit the slopes.

Share something that most people don’t know about you.
I am one of seven children, specifically, the left-handed middle child. My parents and siblings are all right-handed.

Can you share with us your favorite movie or song?
My favorite song is the Sunday Night Football theme song, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” by Carrie Underwood.

Employee Spotlight Keith Ward

KEITH WARD · Project Manager

What does “Beyond What’s Expected” mean to you?
“Beyond What’s Expected” means caring about our coworkers, our projects, and our families and treating everyone with respect and professionalism. At the end of the day, you are remembered by the last thing you have done, so you should always make that the best.

What has been the most valuable lesson learned in the length of your career?
The most valuable lesson I have learned in my over 20+ years in the construction industry is to listen. My father taught me to learn something every day. This happens by listening to your peers and co-workers around you. You can’t be complacent and think you know everything, you should absorb what is happening in your environment and learn so you can grow from it. The world and our industry are constantly changing so we must adapt and change with it.

What do you like the most about working with Buch?
Buch is a family. They treat all their employees as people not just as a number. It is not about putting in your hours and showing a big profit. It is about treating the client right and building something that you are proud of.

If you had to choose one meal to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The one meal I would choose is a Porterhouse steak, roasted potatoes, and steamed spinach with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.

What is one place you haven’t traveled to yet that is on your list?
I would love to travel to Ireland so I can learn about my Irish heritage and see where my grandparents came from.

What is the importance of sports in your life? And how do you think sports contributes to people’s lives?
Sports have played a big part in my life. It started as a youth athlete, playing football, hockey, and lacrosse and continued as an adult competing in triathlons and learning the limits of what the body can do. Sports were so important to me that I now coach my own kids in the same sports I played.

I believe sports have taught me teamwork, discipline, and compassion. Sports helps kids and adults develop lifelong friendships and traditions. I still meet up with teammates from my youth every year and go to a game. We talk about the old times, what our families are up to today and enjoy our time together. Sports have shown me that not every person is good at every sport, but that every kid should have the opportunity to try a variety of sports to find their niche.

How and when were you introduced to The League of Yes?
I was introduced to The League of Yes through one of my closest friends and teammates, Michael O’Connell. Michael and I played hockey in college together at New York Institute of Technology, NYIT. Michael’s son, Mickie, has Down syndrome. As a huge sports fan, The League of Yes has given Mickie the opportunity to play baseball. Mickie also enjoys going to see his favorite NHL hockey team, the NY Islanders.

Why is it important for you to support The League of Yes? How can others get involved?
The League of Yes gives kids and people with special needs of all ages the opportunity to experience and enjoy the benefits of sport, specifically baseball. It aims to develop social skills and increase self-esteem. The organization believes that everyone deserves the chance to play baseball. People with special needs want to be involved just like you and me. We need to do whatever we can to help them be a part of our lives in every way. It is not just about access to fields and playgrounds. It is about being a part of the process and experiencing the joy and comradery that is shared by all of us through sport. The League of Yes gives anyone the opportunity to participate, donate and help kids and adults with special needs enjoy baseball.

Employee Spotlight Hunter King

HUNTER KING · Project Manager

What advice do you have for engineers who just graduated college?
Ask questions. Everyone has to learn, and it starts with a question. What may seem like an embarrassing question, becomes a moment to educate yourself so that the question may never have to be asked again.

What is something you value in the work you do?
In the life sciences division, we build cutting-edge facilities for research, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing companies. These companies are creating medicines to aid and potentially cure all types of diseases and cancers. I take pride and value that my hard work can result in helping others around the world.

A proud moment that comes to mind:
One of my proudest moments in life was earning my chemical engineering degree while working full-time at Buch. Buch was very supportive to hire me full-time and accommodate my work schedule so I could complete my one remaining class. Although it was a busy period, through hard work and determination, I successfully advanced my career and graduated college simultaneously.

Who inspired you to pursue the career you have today? Who are some of your inspirations within the company?
One of the Buch team members connected me and since then the company’s atmosphere and family culture have inspired me to pursue a career in construction. I have the pleasure of working with inspiring individuals, such as Jeff Williford, Vice President, Life Sciences. He became a Vice President early in his career, which shows Buch’s confidence and trust in Jeff’s ability to lead and mentor. Brian Dribben, one of Buch’s Senior Project Managers, is also an inspiration. He is one of the smartest individuals I have ever encountered as he can efficiently analyze new drawings and situations and understand what steps to take next. I also have the pleasure of working with exceptional superintendents Andy Dunn and Warren Hall. Andy has an incredible work ethic and truly does anything to help the Buch team. Warren is regarded as one of the most respected and knowledgeable superintendents within the company and has been with Buch for 30 years. He embodies The Buch Way through his commitment to construction and constant learning.

You are one of the youngest Project Managers at Buch, how were you able to reach that goal less than 5 years out of college?
Leadership at Buch has been instrumental in my growth as a project manager. I owe a great deal of credit to my VP, Jeff Williford, and Senior Project Managers for placing me in opportunities that led to success, assigning challenging tasks for learning, and offering guidance when needed. Thanks to the support and guidance of Buch’s leaders, I have made significant progress in honing my project management skills.

If you weren’t at Buch what would your dream job be?
If I wasn’t working at Buch, I would be a college basketball analyst. I love college basketball and enjoy numbers. I think it would suit me well!

If you could have any superpower what would it be?
If I could have any superpower it would be teleportation. I hate traffic and long drives after a vacation or weekend getaway.

Favorite concert you’ve been to?
I recently went to a Luke Combs concert at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC with my girlfriend Holly. It was the largest venue and best event I have ever attended.

Reigning Cornhole Champion together with Graham King.

Buch’s 2023 Cornhole Tournament

Buch’s Annual Cornhole Tournament

On July 20th, Buch celebrated its 7th annual cornhole tournament! This tradition is a highly anticipated one at Buch and is a blend of fun summer activity and friendly competition – a total of 40 Buch team members formed 20 teams to compete. After several rounds of intense play, brother duo Graham and Hunter King took home first place. Graham returned to defend his status as reigning cornhole champion, and Hunter reclaimed his championship title from 2021. They were joined on the podium by the second-place team Nic Flickinger and Ryan Dougherty, and the third-place intern duo Owen and Kevin. It was a day filled with laughter, teamwork, and good times at Buch HQ!

Annual Howard County Foodbank Partnership

Howard County Foodbank Drive

At Buch Construction, we believe in giving back to our community and making a positive impact in the lives of those around us. This summer marked our fifth annual Howard County Foodbank drive. Year after year, this initiative has become a cornerstone of our commitment to helping our local community combat food insecurity. A special thank you to the Buch estimating team for spearheading this drive every summer and collecting over 600 pounds in donations!

JDRF Real Estate Games 2023

JDRF Real Estate Games

Buch is proud to have been participating in the JDRF Real Estate Games for over 10 years. JDRF, also known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, was founded in 1970 with the mission of ending Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). It is currently the leading global organization funding T1D research, and that is in part due to its creative fundraising events such as the JDRF Real Estate Games. The games, which were founded by industry leaders Adam Singer and Rick Kimball in 1990, are an opportunity to raise money for a life-saving charity, while also giving participants the chance to have fun and engage in some friendly competition.

Our team competed in several events, such as the lacrosse and fastball challenges, volleyball and tug-of-war events. The volleyball tournament is where most shined. Whether it was the team cheering on the sidelines or Autumn Wickstrom’s impressive serving skills, the Buch team made sure that we put up a good fight. Chase Hilliard placed second in the fastball challenge, and Michael Altmann earned first place in the lacrosse challenge!

The JDRF Real Estate Games was a great opportunity to not only have fun and raise funds for an important issue but also a fun day out of the office! Competition is often fun, but it is made all the more special when competing for a cause such as T1D!
