JDRF Real Estate Games 2024

JDRF Real Estate Games

At Buch, we value events that allow us to give back to our larger community. We are passionate about supporting causes that make a difference, and the JDRF Real Estate Games offers us the perfect opportunity to give back. The event gathers professionals from the entire commercial real estate industry to compete and raise funds for an important cause. This year, the 2024 JDRF Real Estate Games took place at The St. James facility in Springfield, VA.

The JDRF Real Estate Games supports Breakthrough T1D’s mission to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Our team was excited about contributing to this mission while enjoying a day of friendly competition and camaraderie.

The day kicked off with the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, where we had a team in each category.  Following the basketball tournaments, our team hit the courts again for the volleyball competition, showing the same level of energy and sportsmanship. Our summer interns were especially eager to dive into the action, participating in both team events and individual challenges. The variety of competitions included the ropes course challenge, lacrosse challenge, golf challenge, fastball challenge, and a scavenger hunt. Notably, two of our interns, Michael Sandacz and Matson Grose, excelled in the ropes course and fastball challenges respectively, both securing second place!

Our team enjoys supporting our community and important causes like Type 1 Diabetes research is part of who we are. We are honored to have participated in the 2024 JDRF Real Estate Games and are excited for next year’s event!

Employee Spotlight Alexa Katz

ALEXA KATZ · Project Engineer

What do you enjoy most about working on a project?
I enjoy seeing a two-dimensional black and white drawing come to life. It’s amazing to see a concept become something tangible, knowing that you helped get it to that point. it’s been exciting to create string relationships with our subcontractors and clients to build a finished product. Over the duration of the project, we’re able to transfer all the online communication to something physical and watch the progression in real time. Being able to meet with our subcontractors and clients on the job site has been extremely beneficial in furthering my understanding of both the construction and project management sides of our jobs. Getting increasingly more exposure has continued to help me grow in this field and maintain strong relationships with everyone that is working on our projects.

What are your main professional goals in the coming years?
Professionally I aspire to become a project manager in the Northeast region in the upcoming years. I’ve been lucky enough to work with multiple project managers at Buch as they take on various projects with a wide range of scopes. I’ve been able to absorb all the positive attributes they bring to their own projects in hopes of being able to follow their lead. Each PM on our team has their own specialties and strengths that shine throughout their project duration; and I hope to move forward in this career with the same.

What does ‘Beyond What’s Expected’ mean to you?
‘Beyond What’s Expected’ to me means surpassing the ordinary standards or requirements in any given situation. It’s about pushing boundaries and delivering results that exceed initial expectations. Essentially, it’s about setting a higher bar for oneself and striving to consistently top it, regardless of various limitations. As a company, it’s crucial to lay a strong foundation, then welcome its employees to contribute new ideas and skills to reach their goals. With this mindset, opens greater opportunities.

What do you like most about working at Buch?
Working at Buch is like working with a family. There is no pressure to be perfect and there is always open ear to listen. While some colleagues may be working on a different project, they are always available and willing to help with yours. Everyone has their own strengths, and when those are shared, they make our company stronger. It’s great to work in a close-knit work environment; one that gets you involved in all aspects of the project and pushes you to be better every day.

What is it like working in a field that’s predominantly male? How is it changing and what has transformed the change?
I think people are still getting used to the fact that women enjoy working in the construction field whether it be architecture, engineering, project management, or even physical labor. I’ve received plenty of calls and emails with the assumption that I’m male, and they call me “Alex” instead of “Alexa”. They are used to women having an assistant position, rather than contributing to the work itself. But I see all of that slowly changing, and I am thankful to work in an environment that welcomes diversity and makes me feel comfortable coming to work every day. I believe diversity in all forms is being recognized and appreciated more in this business, allowing us to bring new perspectives and insight to an industry that may have previously been set in its ways. The gradual increase in exposure to advanced technology and school programs like Women in STEM has certainly encouraged young women to broaden their horizons to greater opportunities in these fields. For some women, they were taught that these interests were “too masculine”, and they had to choose a career path that was considered “feminine”, leading them to sacrifice a skill or hobby that brought them joy. I’m extremely proud to be part of a movement that didn’t exist until very recently, a movement that is opening doors for so many women. It makes me so excited when I see a woman walking around New York City with a construction hat dangling from her backpack, or some rolled up drawings under her arm. I know some day we won’t even be having this conversation anymore.

You previously worked in the healthcare industry and changed your career path, what propelled the change? What have you learned in your previous field and brought into this field?
When I was younger, I wanted to be either a cardiothoracic surgeon or an architect. But I was told the big money was in the medical field, so that’s what I chose. Science fields always fascinated me because there were right and wrong answers, but always room for new discoveries. I loved practicing in the field- being hands-on with patients and being part of the change that made a difference in people’s lives. I learned how to be proactive when people’s lives were literally on the line, I learned discipline and structure, I learned how to collaborate with my coworkers and superiors in high-stress situations, and I learned amazing communication skills while working with patients of various ages and backgrounds. Once COVID-19 hit the world shut down, and I had no idea what my future had in store. I was continuing schooling at that point, and I made the decision to shift gears; to take all the skills I had learned and used them toward something I could see myself making an enjoyable career out of, rather than the path I chose when I was in kindergarten. I spent my entire upbringing focused on following the medical path, but during grade school I would always come home to build K’NEX roller coasters or Robotix figures. I’d get out all the pieces, follow the instructions, and I wouldn’t look up for 6 hours until I was finished. My love for hands-on projects and disciplined training in healthcare pair perfectly for a career in construction project management. I was always taught to treat a patient the way I would treat a family member- with care and respect. Maintaining a caring, professional relationship with a client or a colleague can make or break the ability to secure a project in this industry, and understanding the proper way to treat people will get a person very far in their career. We work in a field of innovation and the need to problem solve and I’m excited to see it grow. Now I just have a little more time to solve these problems than I would have had in the emergency room

Buch has various offices across the East Coast, you are currently working in the New York City office. What is a day like working in New York City?
Working in New York City can certainly be exciting. Even though we work in a small office, there is a good chance that someone is always going to be onsite. If your project is in the city, it’s so easy to walk downstairs and jump on a subway that will likely get you close to the jobsite. Every neighborhood of the city is completely different, some more quiet than others. Our office is in such a central location in the city, it can get quite overwhelming if you’re not used to tourism and the constant movement surrounding you. It’s certainly never quiet, and there is something quite comforting about that. The constant taxi horns and sirens from the street are strangely soothing, and the view of the Empire State Building from my window can’t be beaten. There is always a new restaurant to try for lunch, and something fun to do after the workday is over.

Do you have any special hobbies or interests? Have you ever traveled to pursue them?
I am a huge sports person. I spend my winters traveling up the coast and across the country to snowboard with friends, and the rest of the year is spent playing competitive volleyball and softball. I also spend a lot of time going to concerts. If I could spend all my money on one hobby, it would probably be on live music. New York City is the absolute greatest place to see a show, but I’ve also traveled across the country for concerts and then made snowboard trips out of it.

What do you like to do for fun?
I love art of all kinds. I’ve done plenty of custom pieces for home decor and clothing, and I also do some surf photography along the local beaches when there’s a big swell coming through.

What is one thing you can’t live without?
I don’t think I could live without my 40oz. stainless steel water bottle. I’m not sure how I’ve managed to go most of my life without always carrying one around. I keep one at home, one at my desk, and one in my car.

Career Day 2024

Building the Future at Career Day

At Buch, imparting our values everywhere we go is an integral part of our identity as a company. We are not just a construction company, but one that cares about the future, and one way to show our commitment to that is by creating an impact on the lives of the children in our communities.

On May 22, 2024, Arlington Baptist School celebrated Career Week and one of our Project Managers, Christy Cooper, was invited to offer a construction workshop to a group of third graders. This activity was packed with fun details as well as many educational nuggets that sparked the kids’ interest. Christy has a genuine passion for helping and serving others and it comes through in everything she does.

Chrisy was welcomed by 21 excited little faces. She had prepared bags with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) items for each one of the students. Her presentation began with a brief explanation of who we are and what our company values and our safety principles are. Then proceeded to educate the kids on the importance of each item and instructed the proper way to wear them. Once all the students put on their PPE, she got them straight to work on their ‘Junior Project Managers’ assignments.

The students participated in an interactive activity in which, taking turns, they helped complete an interior fit-out on a doll house. Starting by covering the walls, adding carpet on the floors, installing the light fixtures, placing the furniture, and finishing the process with an inspection! Their third-grade teacher, Mrs. Ward, took advantage of the activity to reinforce the importance of teamwork and other important principles like being kind, practicing integrity, and being excellent in everything we do.

After the project was completed, Christy offered some words of encouragement to the kids for a job well done and expressed the importance of considering a career in the construction industry. Not only was this a fun-filled action-driven experience for the kids, but also an inspiring and insightful way to share a message that can potentially impact their decisions in the future.

Rebuilding Together Howard County 2024

Rebuilding Together Howard County

Founded in 1992, Rebuilding Together Howard County brings together residents and businesses to provide free home repairs for low-income families in Howard County. Over the past 30 years, the organization has renovated more than 800 homes at no cost to homeowners.

Buch has proudly participated in Rebuilding Together Howard County since 2018, with our team members eagerly looking forward to each project. Each year, a different team member leads our efforts. For this year’s project, Hunter King was nominated by division lead Jeff Williford, who was confident in King’s ability to lead this community project and deliver exceptional results.

This year, we had the pleasure of working with a Howard County resident who graciously welcomed us into her home, allowing us to assess the necessary repairs and develop a plan to complete them in a single day. With a solid plan in place, we moved on to recruitment, gathering around twenty Buch volunteers who dedicated their weekend to giving back to the community.

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, it was time for our team to get to work. Interior repairs included the replacement of two full bathrooms, the installation of sister joists, and new flooring and plumbing support in the laundry area. The kitchen received updates with a new sink strainer and refurbished cabinet interiors, and we painted the entire interior of the house. Our team also completed a wide variety of external work. We graded the back hill to divert water away from the house, followed by strawing and seeding the area. A sill plate and rim joist were replaced for added protection, and the existing deck was replaced with a new 8’x11’ structure. We also extended the gutters, added splash pads to prevent erosion, and enhanced the flower gardens with fresh mulch.

The success of the day extended beyond the physical improvements. Our team not only collaborated on a meaningful project but also witnessed the direct impact of their efforts on the Howard County resident. “The opportunity to help someone improve their living conditions is special,” King shared about the experience. “Seeing someone receive this help is not just a task; it’s a moment where you can directly feel the impact of making someone else’s life a little better.”

We look forward to next year’s project and continue to value these opportunities to contribute to our local community. At Buch Construction, giving back is an integral part of who we are.

What does “Beyond What’s Expected” mean to you?
Buch Construction truly lives up to its motto, “Beyond What’s Expected.”  The company’s culture instills the drive for employees to go above and beyond. Our dedication to our work ensures that we not only meet expectations and requirements but do what’s necessary to make sure our customers have the best experience possible.

Give us a brief summary of what your career has been like with Buch so far.
I started at Buch in 1995 as a carpenter/superintendent. I was given the opportunity to learn and grow within the company, working my way up to Project Manager, then to Vice President of the Interiors division, and to my existing position, Vice President. It’s been an amazing journey and I’m so lucky to have found a place in a company that has given me the support and tools I needed to succeed. I’m very proud to be a part of an organization that is family-oriented and that cares so much about every employee and every client.

Reflecting on your years at Buch, what has been one of your favorite days working at Buch?
I have always enjoyed and looked forward to coming to work, but the early years are the days that I always remember. I miss arriving at the office and being greeted by Marie Buch, having conversations with Ms. Louise, and having lunch with Jimmy Buch and other team members. I’d always look forward to the company picnics. Those were some of my favorite days at Buch.

Is there anyone in particular who has impacted your career?
Many people have impacted my career in one way or another, but the two people that have made the biggest impact are Carl and Mike Buch. They have always given me the confidence and support I needed to succeed. They both treat everyone with respect and as if they’re family. Watching how they interact with others has inspired me to do the same.

What inspired you to go into the construction industry?
I have always enjoyed working with my hands and building things. I participated in a Trade and Industry program in high school to learn hands-on skills and explore career options. The feeling of satisfaction I get after completing a project, whether it’s at home or on a jobsite, is very rewarding.

What has been one of the proudest moments in your career?
My promotion to Vice President, Interiors has to be my proudest moment of my career and I’m very thankful to have been given the opportunity.

What does a typical day off look like for you?
Spending time with my family, working on a project around the house, or playing a round of golf (sometimes all three).

What is the next item on your bucket list that you plan to accomplish or a place you would like to travel?
My family left Cuba when I was 5 years old, and I have never been back. I would love to visit Cuba one day.

If you had to choose one meal to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
My mother cooked amazing Cuban food. I would love anything cooked by her for every meal, especially her roast chicken with black beans, rice, and sweet plantains.
